Joan Rosenthal's Report
Numerous NSWelsh-persons as well as 10 Victorians, 5 Canberrans and a solitary Queenslander spent the long weekend of October 4-6 contesting 20 games of the NSW Championships. They included two newbies, May “I’m having a lovely time, I just got thrashed” Waddington from Gunnedah, and Julie “some of you are so serious” Navin from Wollongong.
The Revesby Workers Club hall proved a most satisfactory venue, spacious, and with the tea/coffee facilities in a room removed enough from the scene of play that those who wanted to bemoan their fate could do so loudly, without disturbing players still struggling with their end-games. Day 3 started rather dimly and there was almost a call for torches, but fortunately a Club official was found who could locate the necessary light switches.
To the chagrin of NSW contenders, the Champion’s Trophy ultimately went out of state, won by Peter Tobler of ACT, who performed the remarkable feat of leading at the end of each of the three days. Peter had 15.5 wins out of 21 games. For most of the time World Championship representative Esther Perrins was level-pegging with him, but when Peter won their final game, she had to be content with 3rd, with the perennial Bob Jackman sneaking in for 2nd. Peter and Esther earlier had an interesting finish to a tight game where both players were short of time, the scores were close, and a horde of kibitzers was breathing down their necks. Esther finally went out, with the result a tie, whereupon the kibitzers pointed out that each player could have won, because for each there was a better final move than the one they played. Wonderful how easy it is to see these things from the “gallery.”
Another unusual game occurred between World Championship reps Paul Cleary and John Holgate. Paul began with an exchange followed by four successive bingos. Most of us would think we were history if our opponent did that. But John won by 16 points! Perhaps they’ll share the game with us in ATB. John was also remarkable for achieving both the highest and the lowest game score of the tournament. Among the up-and-coming players, Graeme Lock Lee obtained the highest rating gain in the Masters section, so he’s clearly one to watch for the future.
In the Advanced section Jeff Spring was leading at the end of each of the first two days. But finally it was three women who contested the placings, with Ruby Kotwall of the St George club winning ahead of Kris Logan and Hanne Marks. Meanwhile rumour has it that when Richard Farrington added -CREMENT to EX on the board, his opponent was heard to say “Oh s---!”
Perseverance paid off in the Intermediate section for Nanette “I’ve never won a tournament before!” Reynolds, hard working ASPA(NSW) Secretary from the North Shore club, who chalked up 11 wins from 13 games. Meanwhile Nonie English managed to win both the high word score and the high game score in that section, in different games. Her high word, CHARRING for 158, was the highest scoring word in all sections.
This will surely be the last tournament in the Recreation section for Ram Mohe of Gosford, who in fact was in an unbeatable position by the penultimate game. He also scored the high rating gain in that section. And as he and the other players set out on their different journeys home, the farewell was, “See you at the next tournament.”
